ALUMNI IN THE NEWS
Gerald Nixon ’80 named the new superintendent of Yorktown ISD.
Michael Ramos ’77 to play with the Jim Irsay Band in Las Vegas on March 4.  Irsay, owner of the Baltimore Colts, is the world’s leading collector of rock music and pop culture and will have his traveling museum of artifacts. 
 
HANDBAGS & GLADRAGS
The Alumni Association will host its sixth annual Handbags & Gladrags Saturday, March 4, at The Pavilion. 

Guest speaker will be Deidre Gandy Ransdell ’82, a radio personality at WVLK FM, a mega country station in Kentucky.   Deidre will entertain guests with stories of her radio career, including emceeing the Kentucky Pro Hall of Fame each year and her birthday celebration from George Strait.      
The event includes a silent auction for new and slightly used designer, vintage and novelty purses.  Vintage jewelry will be offered again this year.
     The meal will be catered by Giovanni’s Italian Restaurant.
     Tickets are $25 and may be purchased from any Alumni Board member or online at AngletonAlumni.org.  Seating is limited. Advance tickets only. 
 
REUNIONS
Class of 1968 – Classmates will meet at El Patio from 6 to 9 p.m. on April 22.  They will visit the History Center from 1 to 3.  Contact Kathy Lancaster.
Class of 1973 – 50-year anniversary celebration on June 17.  History Center visit 2-5 followed by dinner/dance 6-11 at Dow Academic Center in Lake Jackson.  $50 per person. Contact Dennis Breazeale at breazeales@sbcglobal.net.
Class of 1981 – Reunion planned for April 15 at The Dirty South at 6 p.m.  Contact Pat Sebesta.
OLD TIMERS – Annual luncheon for those graduating 50 years or more on Sept. 30 at Angleton Junior High.  Class of 1973 will be welcomed this year.   
    
SCHOLARSHIPS
The Alumni Association is now working with 11 scholarships for 2023 seniors – the Murphy Rankin Memorial, Handbags & Gladrags, Class of 1966, Class of 1967, Ray Pearl Condry Memorial, Jacobson Family Scholarship, Chamberlain Family, Coleman-Leist Vocational, O. V. McDaniel Memorial, Milton and Cecile Newton Scholarship  and Tony Herford Memorial.

Donations can be made to any scholarship or to the general Alumni Association scholarship fund by mailing a check to the Alumni Association at PO 122, Angleton, 77516. A recent donation was made by Pam Winder for the 1967 scholarship.

Angleton seniors apply for the scholarships by going through the counselors’ office at the high school. Applications are due online by Feb 10. 
 
MEMBERSHIPS
New Lifetime members of the Angleton Alumni Association are John Blankenship ’70, Maggie Rose Blankenship ’71, Chris Gilbert ’01 and Donna Macha Wolf ’78.
                         
HISTORY CENTER
The Class of 1962 donated $643.12, money they had left over from several reunions to the History Center.

Donations include an FFA Chapter Sweetheart jacket from Katie Sebesta Wellman ’67 and 1950s parade photos from John Cole. 

Joe Jasso ’76 found the Rose Bowl trophy and a silver urn dedicated to the 1973 band directors and spent hours polishing them for display at the History Center. 

Les and Susie Kurth made a $100 donation in honor of Sue Neill.  

Visit the History Center at 1800 N. Downing on Wednesday afternoons and during special events.  Donations may also be mailed to the Alumni Association, PO Box 122, Angleton 77516.
 
APPRECIATION LUNCHES
The Alumni Association will do a Soup, Sandwiches, Salads and Sweets appreciation luncheon for administrative and technology workers and School Board members on February 8. It will feature Seafood Gumbo by Milton Newton, Broccoli Potato Soup by John Morgan ’67 and Chicken Tortilla Soup by Donna Lewis ’68.

    Jan 14, 1914 – Splendid new high school enrolls 30 new students.
    Jan 29, 1947 – Band marches in parade for Houston Fat Stock Show
    Jan, 1948 – First school cafeteria opens and offers hot lunches
    Jan, 1950 – New gym dedicated at Marshall
    Jan 8, 1960 – Victory flag to be flown at AHS after each varsity win
    Jan 31, 1963 – Letter in newspaper complains about girls not being able to wear pants in 18-degree weather
   Jan, 1964 – Girls win Midway Basketball Tournament. Kay Stephens made total of 106 points.
   Jan, 1965 – Delaney’s Pharmacy moves to Palm Center.  Twice size of old store and includes a soda fountain.
    Jan, 1969 – Monsanto pays AISD $562,002 in school taxes
    Jan, 1973  – Snow on Jan 11 and again on Feb 9
    Jan, 1979 – Plans approved for huge new development north of Angleton called Rancho Isabella
   Jan 12, 1989 – Five expelled for bringing weapons to AHS
   Jan 3, 1992 – Disastrous flooding outside Angleton.  100 take shelter in gym at ECC for a week.
  Jan 17, 2023 – Fine Arts Dept. produces “Fiddler on the Roof.”  Culinary Arts students will serve lunches at a Wildcat Bistro on Thursdays. School Board approves purchasing land for new elementary and junior high at FM 521 near CR 32.
