MEMORIAL GARDEN

The Class of 1967 and the Alumni Association will host a dedication at the Memorial Garden on April 15 for students and faculty who have passed away in the last five years.  A reception for their families and friends will be held afterwards at the History Center. 

Students whose names are being added are Austin Jason Riek, Ray Shawn Hudson Jr, Christopher Rivera, Larry Swan, Abigail Arias, Conner Tate and Brodie Tribbett.

Faculty and staff whose names are being added are Leah Glaze, Lena Ramirez, Sherry Rodgers Foster, Joanne Puryear and Tracy Turner.  

All students were enrolled in AISD at the time of their deaths and faculty members were either employed at AISD or had resigned for health issues.

The Memorial Garden, started by the Class of 1967 their senior year, is located at the old high school/junior high at 1900 North Downing.

HANDBAGS & GLADRAGS, GANDY RECEPTION

A sold-out crowd attended the “Social Event of the Season” March 4, enjoying speaker Diedre Gandy Ransdell ’82, finding bargains in purses and vintage jewelry, and, most of all, visiting with old friends.  Amanda Sebesta Oliver ‘89 won the grand prize, a brand new Kate Spade tote bag.  Money raised will fund scholarships for two AHS seniors this year.

A huge crowd attended the reception for the Gandy family – former players of Coach Dan Gandy from 1973 to 1982, former students of Bette Gandy, and classmates of Kyle Gandy ’80 and Diedre Gandy ’82

Bruce Karr ’71 promoted to Associate Director of Engineering for Facilities Planning in the A&M system.   He has been with the system 25 years.

University of Texas basketball coach Rodney Terry ’86 named National Coach of Year by Sporting News and leading the Longhorns to the Elite Eight.  

New softball scoreboard dedicated in Danbury in memory of former teacher April Williamson Williams ’96

City of Angleton naming its new operations center the King Municipal Operations Center in honor of former employee David Lee King who worked for the city 44 years before retiring as Public Works Director  in 2016.  A Marshall graduate, he passed away in 2021.

     Class of 1981 – Reunion planned for April 15 at The Dirty South at 6 p.m.  Contact Pat Sebesta.

     OLD TIMERS – Annual luncheon for those graduating 50 years of more on Saturday, Sept. 30 at Angleton Junior High.  Class of 1973 will be welcomed this year.  

CAREER TECHNICAL 

Angleton Alumni Association board members had lunch served by Culinary Arts students at the Career Technical Center at the high school and then had a tour of the new building.  

All were very impressed with the programs and state-of-the-art equipment available to students studying welding, food service, cosmetology, barbering, graphic arts, robotics, criminal justice, health science, education, engineering, computer animation, agriculture, floral design and more. 

SCHOLARSHIPS

The Alumni Association is now working with scholarships for 2023 seniors – the Murphy Rankin Memorial, Handbags & Gladrags, Class of 1966, Class of 1967, Ray Pearl Condry Memorial, Jacobson Family Scholarship, Chamberlain Family, Coleman-Leist Vocational, O. V. McDaniel Memorial, Milton and Cecile Newton Scholarship and Tony Herford Memorial. 

Interviews were held March 19 and recipients will be announced at Awards Night on May 9. The Alumni Association will host a reception for recipients and families on June 11. 

Alumni donations and fundraisers fund the scholarships.

    AISD grounds crew for putting new mulch and planting roses in area in front of History Center. 

    Lillie Russell Memorial Library in Lindale for donating 1953 and 1954 AHS yearbooks.

HISTORICAL NOTES FOR MARCH

   March, 1913 – Angleton organizes city ball team

   March, 1923 – 2,255 license plates registered for vehicles in county

   March, 1973 – Weingarten’s in Angleton advertises eggs 49 cents a dozen, bacon 89 cents, strawberries 3 pints for $1, 6 cans of soup $1, biscuits 5 cents and extra Big Bonus stamps with purchase of jelly.  

   March 25, 1973 – AHS gym packed for Welcome Home ceremony for Lt. Commander Ross Randle Terry whose wife and five daughters live in Angleton.  A Navy pilot captured six years ago, Lt. Terry was one of 106 POWs released in Vietnam. 

   March, 1983 – Majority of Brazoria County gets new 409 area code 

   March, 2003 – To save money, block scheduling eliminated at high school

   March, 2009 – Ladycats basketball team advances to quarterfinals

   March 10, 2021 – Gov. Abbott says masks no longer a state mandate
