DISTINGUISHED EDUCATORS

Nominations for Distinguished Educators 2023 are due on Friday, June 16. Forms are available on the Angleton Alumni Association website and at the History Center.

Nominees must be retired AISD educators who worked in the district at least 10 years. They may be living or deceased.

An alumni committee will select recipients, who will be honored along with Distinguished Alumni in September.

Former recipients are Sarah Alice Bergen, E. S. Caldwell, Frances Chalmers, Katie Clegg, Lewis Gardner, Don Hood, O. V. McDaniel, Doris Mock, Dr. Patricia Montgomery, John Morgan, Suzanne Muecke, Sue Neill, Stanley Singer, Linda Winder, Don West and Professor T. J. Wright.

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI

Nominations for Distinguished Alumni 2023 are now being accepted at the AISD Administration building.

Nominees must have graduated at least 20 years ago and must have demonstrated a high level of success in their respective fields.  A committee of alumni, faculty and community members will select recipients.

ALUMNI IN THE NEWS

Tom Wilbeck ’88  was presented a Crystal Apple Award honoring Transformational Leaders by Texas A&M University’s School of Education and Human Development. A licensed therapist, trainer and musician Wilbeck specializes in early childhood development. He founded Tom’s Fun Band that performs more than 300 shows a year for children.

Hardy Meredith ‘75 honored by Stephen F. Austin by being named Photographer Emeritus by regents who noted the decades he spent documenting the history of the university. The award-winning photographer, who retired in 2020, has images published in five books highlighting SFA and the Nacogdoches area. 

Former city councilman John Wright ’97 elected mayor of Angleton.

Cecil Booth ’70 re-elected Angleton city councilman.

Tommy Gaines ’71 re-elected to the Angleton ISD school board.  He currently serves as president of the group. 

Jordan Booth ’03 and wife Kristina Barrow Booth ’06 honored by the Dream Center for their volunteer work.

Mark Kanipes ’79 retiring after 40 years of coaching.  He was head coach at Brazosport High for the last four years.

Eric Brown ’00 named new principal of Sweeny Junior High.

Benefit for Rafael “Fie” Acuna ’95 at Clute Park July 8 for medical expenses. BBQ, raffles, auctions.

UT  mechanical engineering student Jalyn Luna Moreno ’21 studying abroad in London, England

OLD TIMERS – Annual luncheon for those graduating 50 years of more on Saturday, Sept. 30 at Angleton Junior High.  Class of 1973 will be welcomed this year.  Catering by Filipp’s Cafe. Silent auction of items from classmates. 

MARSHALL

The Marshall Alumni Association formed in the 1980s has been renamed the Marshall – Wright Education Association and has opened up membership to all who attended Marshall along with friends and family.  The group is working with AISD on plans to remove hazardous items from the old school site and provide restoration work to allow the area to be used by the community.   Renard Thomas ’72 is spearheading the project.  

SCHOLARSHIPS

Including Memorial and Family scholarships, the Association presented 18 scholarships to AHS seniors at Awards Night May 9. 

Recipients and their families are invited to a reception at the History Center on June 11.  Information on all recipients will be in the June newsletter.

HISTORY CENTER     

Donations have included a 1943 football jacket from Mark Pittman that belonged to his father Marvin Pittman; diploma and salutatorian certificate from Kerry Hurt ’66; copy of Memorial booklet for former drama teacher Richard Johnson shared by Joe and Ruth Ann Lostracco.

William Dojahn donated a Fairy Washboard plant to the History Center in honor of Claudia Stockwell Oswald ‘64, one of his former students.

HISTORICAL NOTES FOR MAY

May 13, 1897 – Crowd of 3,000 come on trains, carriages to attend Masonic ceremony of laying cornerstone for Brazoria County’s new courthouse in Angleton

May, 1945 – Front page story in Tattler is about surrender of Germany and need to buy more war bonds to support war effort to defeat Japan

May, 1953 – New school song presented at assembly by Student Council.  Members wrote song with aid of choir director Joe Williamson and band director Frank Stiles, who composed the music.  (Song is still official school song)

May, 1963 – Senior John Henry spends two years constructing a scale model of the new high school out of balsa wood and presents it to school board.

May, 1964 – School board member W. E. Schweinle sends letter to each graduate

May, 1965 – Students may get drivers’ licenses at age 14

May, 1977 – New Quill and Scroll members are Gaye Korenek, Mark DeWeese, Nancy Morris, Kenny Childress, Toby Lewis, Gregg Williams, Paula Peterson, Anthony Paul, Scott Darden, Jerry Brown and Dana Fregia

May, 1985 – FFA teacher Oscar Johnson retires after teaching at Marshall and AHS 36 years.

May, 2001 – Historical Commission erects historical marker at site of Angleton’s first school.

May, 2003 – AISD decides to eliminate paddling at all campuses
