ALUMNI IN THE NEWS

      Rodney Boehm ’74 honored by A&M with the Inspiring the Spirit of Aggieland 41 award.  After a successful career in industry, he has returned to his alma mater as Director of Engineering Entrepreneurship.

      Joshua Ibarra  ’14 playing for Team Mexico in the FIBA Basketball World Cup.  The 6’11” Houston Baptist graduate, has played pro basketball the past four years.

      Benefit for Rafael “Fie” Acuna ’95 at Clute Park July 8 for medical expenses. BBQ, raffles, auctions.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS

      KALEY ARBOGAST.  Handbags & Gladrags Scholarship.  No. 17 in her class, national competitor in culinary arts, president of FCCLA club, she plans to attend the Culinary Institute of America to become a chef.

      ISABEL AVALOS – Handbags & Gladrags Scholarship.  No. 4 in her class and captain of the volleyball team, she will attend Texas State with plans to become a nurse practitioner. Her mother is Matilda Mosquda Avitua ’87.

      STEPHANIE BROWN – Angleton Alumni Association Scholarship. Active on the drill team, golf team and peer leadership, she will attend Baylor and major in biochemistry.  Parents are Scott Brown ’92 and Kathy Heironimus Brown ’93. 

      ISABELLA BUENTELLO – Ray Pearl Condry Memorial Scholarship. No. 7 in her class and an All-County Soccer player, she will attend A&M to become a pediatric nurse practitioner.  Her mother is Mariza Gutierrez Buentello ’94.

      KYLA CASEY – Milton and Cecile Newton Scholarship.  Active in FFA and a state competitor in the Texas High School Rodeo Association, she plans to major in Agricultural Sciences at Sam Houston University.  Family includes grandfather Larry Donnelly ’71, father Jade Casey ’97 and mother Amber Donnelly Casey ’98.

      EVA CRUSE – Angleton Alumni Association Scholarship.  Colonel of the Drill Team, No. 9 in her class with 40 hours of college credit, she will attend the University of Houston to become a physical therapist.  Her father is David Cruse ’87.

      BRYLEE DORSETT – Tony Herford Memorial Scholarship.  A top 10% grad active on the drill team and in health occupations, she will attend A&M to become a pediatric nurse practitioner.

      LEEANDRA FOSTON –  Chamberlain Family Scholarship. Active in track, volleyball and Student Council, she will major in psychology at the University of Houston.  Her mother is April Grice Foston ’97.

      SUZANNA GONZALES – Angleton Alumni Association Scholarship.  Lt. Colonel of the Drill Team, a Top 10% grad, active in 4H and Student Council, she will attend Texas A&M to become a physical therapist.  Her mother is Jennifer Johnson Gonzales ’95.

      MORGAN HILL – Class of 1966 Scholarship. Captain of the soccer team, FFA officer and top 10% grad, she will attend Texas A&M to become a veterinarian.  Family includes grandfather Jamie Hill ’66 and mother Jennifer Wendell Hill ’92.

      TAYLOR JACKSON – Angleton Alumni Association Scholarship.  An All American cheerleader active in health occupations and a nursing home volunteer, she will attend Sam Houston State to study nursing.  Grandmother is Thelma Jackson ’87 and mother is Brandy Jackson ’02.

      JASE LIMMER – Murphy Rankin Memorial Scholarship.  Top 10% grad, active in Engineering Club and Golf Team, he will major in Industrial Distribution at Texas A&M.  Parents are Clint Limmer ’95 and Jennifer Eickenhorst Limmer ’95.

      JANE MUGUERZA – Alumni Association Scholarship.  Top 10% grad, band section leader, certified welder, Leo Club officer, she will attend Texas A&M where she will join the Corp, be in the Aggie band and major in mechanical engineering. 

      MIA SEBESTA – O. V. McDaniel Memorial Scholarship and Angleton Alumni Association Scholarship.  Active in theatre arts and welding, she won state awards in welding and will attend Brazosport with plans to someday manage her own welding shop.  Family includes grandmother Loretta Grimmett Sebesta ’63.  

      OLIVIA SMITH – Marvin and Bettye Jacobson Memorial Scholarship.  No. 5 in her class and an All State choir member who performed at Carneige Hall, she will major in music education at Stephen F. Austin University. 

      YANDEL SOLORZANO – Coleman-Leist Scholarship in Memory of Rachel Leist.  A top student in career-tech barbering at AHS, he will continue barbering studies at Brazosport with plans to use it to work his way through college to become a graphic designer.

      EMMA VOOSEN – Class of 1967 Scholarship.  No. 10 in her class, vice-president of the band, state bassoon player, she will attend The University of Texas to major in speech pathology.  Grandmother is Janie Light. 

REUNIONS

   Phillip Luna ’61 donated a framed photo of the pro football jersey his friend Emmitt Thomas (Marshall ’61) gave him

   Vernon Smith ’74 donated an FFA jacket.

The History Center has made a copy of the recipe book for Roland’s that Kim Vines ’99 brought in.  It belonged to her grandmother Lou Vines who managed the restaurant in the 1960s and 1970s.

   Kathy Copeland Lancaster ‘68 donated her band blanket.  Band president and First Chair French Horn, she said band “was her life” in high school. 

   Kimberly Wells of Denton providing information on an aunt, Ida Blanche Stratton, who died in a car accident when she was 16 in 1933.

    Robin Braun donated AMS and Rancho yearbooks along with 2020 and 2023 Westside yearbooks.   Central Elementary donated a 2023 yearbook. 

Visit the History Center at 1800 N. Downing on Wednesday afternoons and during special events.  Donations may also be mailed to the Alumni Association, PO Box 122, Angleton 77516.

HISTORICAL NOTES FOR JUNE

     June, 1911 –    32nd Legislature passes new law that county commissioners are to appoint trustees to oversee schools in each county and do group purchasing of school supplies.                        

    June, 1922 – Local radio station 5KM will broadcast nightly concerts from Houston stations

      June, 1965 – Two day sale to public of all furniture and fixtures from Central Elementary

      June, 1973 – Class of 1923 celebrates 50th anniversary.  124 attend dance, play piano, sing songs and graduates give updates on their lives.

      June, 1973 – Angleton will offer free kindergarten for first time.

      June, 1988 – Dennis Beaver named Outstanding Performer at state band competition. Charles Landin named to All State Choir.

      June, 1991 – Former band director James Hejl named new AHS principal

      June, 2019 – Ladycats win second state softball championship

      June, 2023 – Six  AHS choir students recognized as Texas Music Scholars

      June, 2023 – Trustees vote to potentially purchase 15-acre tract in new Pecan Ranch development in Bonney for a new elementary school
